Born in Brooklyn to an abusive father and mentally ill mother, Clara Bow rose from poverty to become known as “The It Girl” during the silent film era. “It,” of course, was sex appeal, and the magnetic Bow is remembered as the ultimate 1920’s flapper. Onscreen she was known for her dancing and vitality. Unfortunately, her real life was not as carefree as the characters she depicted. Plagued by mental illness, Bow was entered a mental institution in 1931 and Paramount released her from her contract. She went on to make a few more films, and eventually ended her career in favor of marriage and motherhood, but still suffered bouts of mental instability.
