Christy was perhaps the most popular and beloved baseball player of all-time. Known by several nicknames, including "Matty," "Big Six," and "The Christian Gentleman," Matty served in the U.S. Army in World War I along with Ty Cobb. He and Cobb trained soldiers in the use of protective chemical weapons masks. It was during one such training exercise that Matty accidentally took in some of the chemicals, which led to his developing tuberculosis and, subsequently, to his tragic early death at the age of 45. After amassing an unbelievable 373-188 lifetime record and 2.13 ERA, Matty was one of the first five players enshrined into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936 -- the other four were Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, and Honus Wagner.
