“Newk” is the only player ever to win a Cy Young Award (1956), Rookie of the Year honors (1949), and the National League MVP Award (1956). In 1949, he became the first African-American pitcher to start a World Series game. In 1962, Newcombe signed a contract with the Chunichi Dragons, becoming the first major league baseball player to play professionally in Japan. “Newk” was also a great hitting pitcher, amassing a lifetime batting average of .271.

Spahn, one of the greatest lefties in baseball history, was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973 by 83% of the vote. After serving up Willie Mays' first career home run, Spahn told reporters after the game, "Gentlemen, for the first 60 feet, that was a great pitch." Spahn won more games (363) than any other left-handed pitcher in baseball history. To amass that amazing win total, Spahn won 20 games or more in thirteen times.
